Daylily Breeder Terms Dictionary Quick Start Guide

The Always Green Nursery Guide to Translating Daylily Breeder Terms:

Daylilies may be beautiful and very plentiful but if you're new to purchasing or researching them the terms used by many sellers can be quite confusing! Use this short guide to be 'in the know' on daylily breeder terms.



D=Dormant Refers to the type of foliage.
E=Early bloomer In Zone 5 of lower, this means the daylily blooms in June.
EV=Evergreen Refers to the type of foliage.
EXT=Extended bloom The flowers remain open for at least 16 hours each.
FR=Fragrant This may refer to the flower, the foliage, or both.
L=Late bloomer In Michigan, this means the daylily blooms in August.
M=Midseason bloomer In Michigan, this means the daylily blooms in July.
NOC=Nocturnal This means that the flower buds open in late afternoon and remain open through all or part of the next day.
RE=Rebloomer This type of daylily usually repeats bloom. Some rebloom right after they are finished with their initial round of bloom. Others rest for a month or two before reblooming.

TET=Tetraploid Tetraploids have double the number of chromosomes as diploids. As a result, they are usually stronger growers and have larger flowers.
