Radio Shack Pro 2006 Scanner
The Pro 2006 is most likely remembered for its versatility to receive 25MHZ-1300MHZ with a simple modification. Although it is unlawfull, many of these model scanners were originally modified to pick up cell phones. The mod is very simple to do. Unlike other scanners, all that is needed to mod this is a phillips screwdriver and a pair of wire cutters. The purpose of this guide is to familiarize people with this scanner, the neat features that it has which are unique to this scanner, and a general discussion about how advanced in technology it was, with respect to the scanners made today.
This scanner featured 400 programmable channels and had by far a wider band selection than any scanner ever made. It even exceeded todays standards in many areas. A sound squelch made it really neat to swing by frequencies that were a dead carrier with no modulation, whereas most of todays scanners just get hung up on birdie frequencies and un-modulated carriers.
The scanners lock out was well designed in that you could remove the locked out frequencies because it offered a review switch so that you could see what was locked out. It featured dual speed mode which was easily modified to scan at 40 channels per second vice the 26 in high speed mode, a front panel reset was also incorporated which in todays scanners requires you to put in a code and then turn the scanner on to reset it. Todays codemakes it difficult to reset a scanner that is locked and needs resetting especially when the code isnt even in the operators guide.
This scanner does not get any digital, data, or ctcss/dcs tones, and it doesnt trunk either but if you put it beside a good trunking unit like the Uniden BC898t, You will have the best of both analog and digital reception you could ever ask for.
The rest of the features are pretty well the same as all Radio Shack scanners. I just wanted to outline thestuff that gets overlooked.
MYTH or FACT
Did you know that EVERY scanner will pick up the old analog cell phones? Even if they were designed not to tune in the specific frequencies of cellular phones, every scanner when programmed exactly 21.4MHZ above or below the cellular frequency will pick up the image frequency just as strong as the real one. With that out on the table, Although scanners are now made to have 2 frequency breaks in the 800MHZ band, that doesnt change a thing. I will remind you though that as per FCC regulations, it is unlawfull to monitor cell phones. Now, with the privacy act, cordless and 2 way radio FRS type are also part of this ordeal. The surprising thing is that we can scan Police, Fire, Ambulance,Military, Air,and many other utilities, and find out where they set up road blocks, radar traps, fire locations, disasters, you name it. Also, government private frequencies are also scannable and with all this, the FCC only set the regulations for Cell and cordless. Im sure in time, we wont even be able to listen to the police scanners anymore because they will finally figure out that making police and otherfrequencies is probably more important to block than cells and cordless because Im sure that the Police need to keep a lid on things moreso than the old lady up the road who talks about her cat. What WILL we do?
